Game Day Countdown:

Maryland game will define season
Nov. 1, 2007

I've had much to say this season.  Just didn't take time to write anything.  But I have enjoyed watching our Heels grow up and steadily improve every game.  Well, up to the Wake Forest game.  I've come to the conclusion that a young team with a first year coaching staff definitely should not have a bye week.

I couldn't believe how badly we were at Wake Forest.  At the start, we had players and coaches confused as to what package we needed on the field for several plays.  Players were running on and off just prior to the snap.  And our first offensive play was an interception thrown by Yates.  R-u-s-t-y!!

I told my buddy we were snake bit and just enjoy the fresh air and beautiful sunny sky.  Turned out our defense played pretty good later in the game.  I wasn't very impressed with Yates going 26 for 33 as many passes were of the short yardage, safe variety.  So the yards gained were a tribute to the receivers making yards after the catch.  And not much by the offense equated into points.

This Saturday in Kenan Stadium is a defining moment for the Heels and this season.  If we come out sharp and get back on track, we will beat Maryland.  That will be a huge confidence builder.  And a load of confidence will be needed for the following two games played away - NC State and Ga Tech.  Then we have Duke at home.

Why do I think the Maryland will define the season for Carolina football?   Our record is 2-6.  We have four games left.  Win out and we're bowl eligible.  Lose to Maryland and this season is over.  We'll play the remaining games, but that will be playing for experience to help next year.

Up to last week I have loved how well the team has been prepared and coached during the game, how well our coaches made in-game adjustments, how hard the players competed from start to finish, and how the players remained focused on the game until the last tick on the clock.  It's been years since I've seen a Carolina football team perform on the field like this season.

Unfortunately, we have lost some close games very late in the fourth quarter.  But I have been able to walk out of the stadiums, home and away, with my head up, smile on my face, and damn proud to be a Carolina Fan!  What we have witnessed this season is the beginning of a real football program.  I'm feeling that we are very capable of winning out and getting a bowl.  And that's why the Maryland game will define this season.
