Chapel Hill _What a special
day! Just before the half-time show in Kenan Stadium, a number of
former players under Bill Dooley were lined up by the North Side
shrubs. I spotted Ike Olglesby.
I immediately ran down to the fence
shouting, "Hey Big Ike!" He finally heard me and came
over to shake my hand. He had remembered me from our meeting after
the last Spring Game. Walter Sturdivant came over to shake my hand
too. He had seen my site and said, "I pull it up all the
time."
I've gotten lots of feedback from
Carolina fans, who enjoy what I do at CarolinaFan.com. But to hear
that former players enjoy it too is truly an honor.
About that time Mike Voight runs up with
hand extended. He wanted to thank me for doing his tribute
feature, Space
Cowboy - A Tribute to Michael Ray Voight. Yo Mike, the
pleasure was all mine. I then invited them to tailgate with my
group of friends and fellow Carolina fans after the game. I said
we're always down in the large Dean Dome lot close to the brick parking
deck.
About an hour or so after the victory
over ECU, guess who drops by? Michael Ray Voight. The crowd
lit up, as you can imagine. We had a 140 pound pig on the grill,
so we fed him well. He had a few brewskis with us too.
As the evening wore on, Mike seemed to
really be enjoying himself. He told us lots of funny stories about
his playing days at Carolina. We couldn't stop laughing. He
explained what he used to do after scoring a touchdown - like a flying
airplane doing a wing tip towards the opponent bench. Check out the
picture to your right.
We had the CarolinaFan Web Cam rolling
the whole time. You can view
the captured pictures here. I hope you enjoy them, and get a
sense of how much this meant to all the Carolina fans. Mike even
signed hats and t-shirts for us. Check it out below.
Carolina Cathy has a new nickname
now. Mike calls her Special K. More fun? I called a
buddy and former player, Bill Span, and put him on the phone with
Mike. Then I gave Bill some hell for not flying out from Seattle
one game to join the fun. He said he'd try.
Do you think more Carolina fans would
come early and stay late if former players dropped by a tailgate
party? Maybe this night can be the start of a new tradition at
Carolina to help build a greater fan base. I bet we could take
this on the road too.
The Space Cowboy will be back in Chapel
Hill for the SMU game. Hope you will visit again, Mike.
