John "the Beast" Bunting
John "the Beast" Bunting
Must instill confidence

Raleigh_Vince Lombardi once said that experience was the one thing that made him one of the most successful coaches in football history.

"The other thing," he said, "was I think I maybe had a knack for instilling confidence in teams that weren't so good at the time. Weak teams can become good teams pretty fast if they can find and keep confidence in themselves while they're still losing."

Throughout this season John Bunting has talked about coaching for player improvement.  Very important, indeed.  But he may have done better to consult with a sports psychologist.

From watching the Heels play this season, I think they could most use a huge dose of self-confidence.  They seem to do an excellent job of starting the game full of energy.  They're making plays on both sides of the ball, and in most cases the special teams are giving good enough field position.  They seem to have enough momentum to be competitive.

Then something happens.  Our opponent makes a big play or we make an untimely mental mistake, whether it's blown coverage, dropped ball or getting a penalty.  The momentum shifts dramatically.  And it usually results in points for the other team.

An experienced team can get the momentum back.  Yes, at this point of the season, our players have gained experience.  But we've had injuries that results in new players in the lineup.  Even if the players weren't freshmen or those who are seeing some of their first game action, they just haven't had much time playing together as a unit.  And that's what's hurting.

For the most part, our coaches have called a good game and the schemes seem right at the right time.  But at the same time the execution has been poor too many times and the loses have piled up.  The players have learned the play book.  The newer players seeing action have had a couple of games and more practice in the various units.  They are primed for a breakout game.

I'm expecting to see the Heels come out fighting and show the ability to maintain momentum.  And when a momentum shift occurs, I'm betting they will find that inner voice that instills confidence.  It's time for several players to step up with greater on the field leadership.  It's the last chance for a home win this season and the Heels come through...  Carolina 31 - Clemson 27.

Go Heels!
