Coaching
Accomplishments
- Has 21
years of coaching experience at the collegiate level, all on the
defensive line.
- Coached on
the 1996 National Championship team.
- Has coached
on three conference championship teams (Duke - 1989, Florida -
1995, 1996).
- Coached in
the 1995 National Championship Game in the Fiesta Bowl vs.
Nebraska and the 1996 National Championship Game in the Sugar
Bowl vs. Florida State.
- Coached in
three SEC Championship Games (1995, 1996, 1999).
- Coached on
seven bowl teams, including five New Year's (Jan. 1 or Jan. 2)
games.
- At Florida
has coached two All-Americans (Mark Campbell and Ed Chester) and
four first-team All-SEC selections (Mark Campbell, Ed Chester,
Reggie McGrew and Mike Moten).
- In his five
seasons at UF (1995-99) the Gators have held their respective
opponent to less than 100 rushing yards in 32 of 63 games.
- UF has
ranked among the top three teams in the SEC in rushing defense
in four of the five seasons he has been at Florida and led the
SEC in 1997 and 1998.
- In 19 of
UF's last 49 games (1996-99 seasons) the opponent has been held
to 50 or less rushing yards.
- Over the
last three seasons (1997-99) the Gators have ranked no lower
than ninth in the nation in rushing defense (2nd in 1997, 4th in
1998 and 9th in 1999).
- The best
single-season rushing defense performance in UF history occured
in 1997 (70.7).
- The 1998
Gator defense was one of just five in the nation to rank in the
Top 10 in the final NCAA stats in rushing defense, pass
efficiency defense, total defense and scoring defense.
- The Gators
set a new school record with 50 sacks in 1997, an average of 4.5
per game. UF has ranked first in the SEC in quarterback sacks in
each of the last four seasons (1996-99).
- Florida was
one of only six schools in 1997 to rank in the national top 15
in rushing defense, pass efficiency defense and total defense.
- Served as
Duke's defensive line coach for his entire 14 years on the Blue
Devil staff, playing a key role in the unit's improvement
against the run.
- Duke's 1989
team shared the Atlantic Coast Conference title with Virginia
and made its first bowl appearance in over 25 years, in the
All-American Bowl vs. Texas Tech.
- The 1989
Duke team finished the year with seven straight victories and a
co-ACC Championship in Steve Spurrier's final year at the helm.
