UNC 1973-76 NFL 1977, Houston Oilers A hard-running tailback from 1973 to 1976, who was the ACC Player of the Year as both a junior and senior. Voight is third in Carolina history in scoring and second in rushing with 254 points and 3,971 yards, respectively. He had three 1,000-yard seasons and twice was the top ground-gainer in the ACC. In 1976 he scored 110 points and ran for 1,407 yards, including 261 in his final game -- a dramatic 39-38 shootout with Duke. The mid-1970's brought more success as UNC made bowl appearances in 1974 (Sun), 1976 (Peach) and 1977 (Liberty). Sammy Johnson was a 1,000-yard rusher for Carolina in1973, as was James Betterson in 1974. But the outstanding offensive player of this era was Mike Voight who gained over 1,000 yards in 1974, 1975 and 1976. Mike earned All-America honors in 1976. Mike's jersey was honored during a half-time ceremony at Kenan Stadium. The first recipients of the honored jerseys were introduced in 1994. On hand were, from left to right, Charlie Justice, George Barclay, Danny Talbott, Ken Huff, Ron Rusnak, Dee Hardison, Mike Voight, Ethan Horton's mother, Art Weiner's grandson, Art Weiner and Don McCauley.
